OCNI Youth Shadow Council

Mandate: The OCNI Youth Shadow Council functions as a volunteer youth advisory group to OCNI staff and the OCNI Board of Directors. This council is modelled as an operational committee with a focus on promoting youth leadership development and engaging young Canadians on key issues in the nuclear energy sector.

Program Description

The OCNI Youth Shadow Council (OYSC) is a youth leadership council for those who want to shape the future of the Canadian nuclear industry and help Canada achieve its “Net Zero by 2050” target.

The OYSC would function as a volunteer youth group that works with the OCNI staff and the OCNI Board of Directors. The OYSC targets students and recent graduates between the ages of 18-30.

The goal of the Youth Shadow Council is to promote youth leadership development and engagement on key issues in the Canadian nuclear energy sector.

2023-2024 marked the inaugural year for OCNI’s Youth Shadow Council (OYSC). The OYSC is a volunteer youth group that works with OCNI staff and the OCNI Board of Directors to promote youth engagement in the nuclear sector. OCNI recognized the need and interest for youth input for industry partners and received applications for the OYSC from students and young professionals. With passion and diverse perspectives, the OYSC team of twelve brought strength to the Council.

The Council engages young leaders and youth across Canada to be involved with the future of the Canadian nuclear sector as we strive to meet the ‘Net Zero by 2050’ target. The committee’s primary function includes promoting youth leadership development by educating peers using social media channels, webinars, and campaigns to disseminate information about nuclear energy in Canada.

Please review the Council’s year-end report that demonstrates how enthusiastic they are about the environment, clean energy, and emerging technologies, and motivated to contribute to the Canadian nuclear sector. This Council is eager to see more youth in industry roles as the sector continues to grow. We hope that you gain insight into the youth perspective and learn more about what we have accomplished this year from this report.
